Pope Leo XIV recovers from lung surgery, maintains South American tour plans

Pope Leo XIV is recovering following surgery to remove a lung tumor, identified as adenocarcinoma, at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Following his discharge, the Pope made his first public appearance at the Apostolic Palace window to lead the Angelus prayer, expressing his intention to gradually resume his duties.

Medical professionals, including surgeon Stefano Margaritora, have indicated that there are currently no clinical impediments to the Pope’s scheduled apostolic journey to South America. The tour, planned for November 6 to 17, is set to include visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.

Preparations for the visit are advancing in the target countries. In Argentina, the Church is coordinating with over 25,000 volunteers for stops in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján. In Peru, a Vatican mission is scheduled to arrive on October 26 to finalize logistical arrangements for visits to Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa.
