Pope Leo XIV to make first public appearance Sunday following lung surgery

Pope Leo XIV is showing steady recovery following surgery to remove part of his right lung due to lung adenocarcinoma. Doctors at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome reported on Friday that the 71-year-old pontiff is making progress and is now able to carry out daily activities with full independence.

The Vatican announced that the Pope plans to make his first public appearance since the operation this Sunday by delivering a traditional noontime prayer. Medical updates indicate that recent blood tests and chest X-rays confirm his improvement.

Despite his recent health challenges, preparations for the Pope's planned trip to South America in November are continuing. The itinerary is expected to include visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru between November 6 and 17.
