Pope Leo XIV shows steady recovery after lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV is showing steady recovery following a surgical procedure to remove a tumor from his right lung. On Friday, October 16, the Vatican released images of the 71-year-old Pontiff celebrating Mass at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome. The ceremony was attended by medical staff and members of the Vatican Gendarmerie.

Medical reports from doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora indicate that recent blood tests and chest X-rays show a constant improvement in his general condition. The Pope has regained the ability to perform daily activities with total autonomy and is continuing scheduled respiratory physiotherapy sessions.

While his recovery is progressing favorably, medical teams are still monitoring him to determine if the adenocarcinoma has spread. The Vatican has confirmed that the Pope is expected to lead the Angelus prayer this Sunday. However, his upcoming pastoral trip to South America, scheduled for November 6 to 17, remains subject to his clinical evolution and medical advice.
