Pope Leo XIV recovers following lung surgery
Pope Leo XIV is recovering well following a successful surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung to treat adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer. The 71-year-old pontiff underwent the approximately 90-minute procedure at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Tuesday.
Vatican officials report that the Pope’s postoperative recovery is progressing normally. He has begun walking around his room, participating in respiratory physiotherapy, and has resumed eating normally. Following the surgery, the Pope has already performed the Angelus prayer from a hospital chapel, standing without assistance.
Medical professionals expect the Pope to remain under observation in the hospital for approximately one week. Despite the recent health procedure, preparations for his planned trip to South America—including visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru—are reportedly proceeding as scheduled.
