Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery for lung nodule

Pope Leo XIV announced on Sunday, October 11, that he will undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. The announcement was made during the Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square. The Pope described the nodule as being in a very early and well-localized stage, discovered during recent routine medical examinations.

The surgical procedure is scheduled to take place in the coming days at the Agostino Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Following the operation, the Pope is expected to remain hospitalized for approximately one week for recovery. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed the planned hospitalization period.

The medical news comes shortly before the Pope’s scheduled apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, planned for November 6 to 17. While the surgery will necessitate a temporary suspension of his official Vatican agenda, there has been no official confirmation regarding changes to his upcoming South American itinerary. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other international leaders have expressed their support and closeness to the Pontiff during this time.
