Pope Leo XIV calls Putin to request humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky

Pope Leo XIV held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky, located in the Kherson region. From his hospital bed at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, where he is recovering from surgery to remove a portion of his right lung due to lung adenocarcinoma, the Pope called for a humanitarian ceasefire. This truce is intended to facilitate the delivery of essential food and medical supplies and to allow for the voluntary and safe evacuation of approximately 2,000 trapped civilians.

The Kremlin described the call as constructive and noted that Putin expressed support for the Vatican’s intention to help ensure security and supplies for the residents. However, Russian officials attributed the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky to the Ukrainian government. Despite the ongoing recovery, the Vatican confirmed that preparations for the Pope’s planned November visit to South America, including Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, are proceeding as scheduled.
