Pope Leon XIV to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November 2026
Pope Leon XIV will make his first apostolic journey to South America from 6 to 17 November 2026, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. In Uruguay the pontiff will be in Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida from 6 to 8 November. He will then travel to Argentina, where he will stay from 8 to 11 November and hold events in Buenos Aires, Luján and Córdoba. The Peruvian leg runs from 11 to 17 November, with stops in Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa.
The itinerary was confirmed by Vatican press director Matteo Bruni. Argentine President Javier Milei called the visit “historic for all Argentines,” while Uruguay’s foreign minister Mario Lubetkin said the Pope’s arrival “will be a great thing” for the country. In Peru, President Keiko Fujimori’s government said the trip could serve as a “bálsamo” and promote national reconciliation. Local preparations include a Vatican delegation inspecting venues in Cusco and the restoration of the Machu Picchu railway after forest‑fire damage, which had briefly stranded visitors such as gymnast Simone Biles.
The Pope, born in the United States, became a Peruvian citizen in 2015 and previously served as bishop and archbishop emeritus of Chiclayo, making the Peru visit a return “home” after more than two decades.
