Local preparations include a Vatican delegation inspecting venues in Cusco and the restoration of the Machu Picchu railway after forest‑fire damage, which had briefly stranded visitors such as gymnast Simone Biles.

The Pope, born in the United States, became a Peruvian citizen in 2015 and previously served as bishop and archbishop emeritus of Chiclayo, making the Peru visit a return “home” after more than two decades.
