Pope Leo XIV to make historic South American apostolic trip in Nov 2026
The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV will travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from 6 to 17 November 2026. In Uruguay he will be in Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida from 6‑8 Nov, marking the first papal visit to the country since 1988. In Argentina he will visit Buenos Aires, Córdoba and the sanctuary of Luján from 8‑11 Nov, the first papal trip there since 1987. The final leg in Peru will cover Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa from 11‑17 Nov, the first since 2018. The Pope, a Peruvian citizen since 2015 and former bishop of Chiclayo, has highlighted his personal ties to the region. Peruvian tourism officials expect the visit to generate an economic boost of US$20‑40 million. Argentine President Javier Milei called the visit historic, and San Lorenzo football club has formally asked that the Pope celebrate mass at its stadium during the Argentine stage. The itinerary was confirmed by Vatican press office spokesperson Matteo Bruni.
