Pope Leon XIV to visit Peru in November‑December as part of South American tour
Peru’s regional tourism authority is coordinating with a goddaughter of Pope Leon XIV to promote a possible papal visit to the northern city of Piura, hoping the event would double tourist flows in areas linked to the pope’s pastoral work. No official confirmation exists yet, but officials say the visit could significantly boost local tourism and infrastructure.
The government announced that the Peruvian‑born pope will travel to Peru before the end of the year, likely in November or early December, for a three‑day stay that will include Chiclayo, Lima and a third Amazonian city. The trip is part of a wider South American tour that is expected to also cover Argentina and Uruguay. Pope Leon XIV, born in Chicago and naturalised as Peruvian in 2015, is scheduled to meet interim President José Carlos Balcázar in the Vatican before the visit.
The anticipated pilgrimage follows historic papal visits to the country and is expected to draw large crowds, with estimates that tourism-related activity could double in the affected regions.
