Popocatépetl volcano activity sparks fireball video and ashfall warnings for Mexico City

A video captured by the Webcams de México network on the night of 24 July showed a bright object crossing the summit of Popocatépetl, prompting speculation about a fireball, a slow‑moving firefly, a falling star or an optical artifact. Authorities have not confirmed the phenomenon.

The National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) and the National Civil Protection Coordination continue to monitor the volcano, which remains at Yellow Alert Phase 2. The volcano emits low‑intensity exhalations of steam, gases and ash. Based on wind forecasts, civil‑protection officials warned that ash could fall on Mexico City’s boroughs of Milpa Alta and Tlalpan, advising residents to stay informed, keep windows closed and protect respiratory health. No evacuation order has been issued.
