Overview

Since the heightened activity began on 24 June 2026, Popocatépetl has remained under a Yellow Phase 2 alert. Low‑magnitude explosions and ash plumes have intermittently affected Mexico City’s southern boroughs, prompting mask distribution, school closures and public‑transport adjustments.

On 29 July, the volcano emitted a series of low‑intensity water‑vapor and gas plumes—reports noted between 13 and 25 exhalations—accompanied by a minor magnitude 1.5 vulcanotectonic quake and an eleven‑minute tremor. Authorities reiterated the 12‑km exclusion zone and warned of possible lahars if rain falls.

By early August the overall activity had eased, but monitoring on 4 August recorded 44 exhalations within 24 hours and a plume reaching roughly 300 m, drifting west‑southwest. The alert level remained unchanged, with continued advisories to avoid the crater area and respect the exclusion zone.

On 7 August the volcano produced a denser eruption, sending an ash column about 3.5 km high. Ash fell over Jiutepec and several municipalities in Morelos and Puebla. Cenapred kept the Yellow Phase 2 status, issuing health warnings to stay indoors, use masks, close windows and refrain from outdoor activities while the 12‑km exclusion zone stays in force.

Civil‑protection agencies continue daily monitoring and will issue updates should conditions change.
