Popocatépetl volcano activity triggers ash warnings in Mexico City

The Popocatépetl volcano has exhibited increased activity, recording 12 exhalations within a 24-hour period. Consequently, authorities have maintained a Yellow Phase 2 volcanic alert level.

An ash emission was detected moving westward toward Mexico City, prompting the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) to issue a warning for six boroughs: Álvaro Obregón, Coyoacán, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco. Residents in these areas are advised to cover water containers, protect their noses and mouths, and avoid outdoor activities.

Monitoring of the volcano is conducted by the National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) with support from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The surveillance infrastructure includes a network of seismic stations, GNSS equipment to detect ground deformation, gas sensors, and cameras to observe emissions.
