Popocatépetl volcano ash alert covers four Mexico City boroughs

The Mexico City civil protection agency issued an urgent alert after increased activity at the Popocatépetl volcano raised the likelihood of volcanic ash falling on the capital. Authorities identified the boroughs of Tlalpan, Xochimilco, Milpa Alta and Magdalena Contreras as being under the highest risk for ash dispersion over the coming hours.

Residents in the affected areas were advised to wear masks or cover their noses and mouths, keep windows and doors closed, avoid outdoor activities, and clean ash from surfaces without wetting it. Health officials warned that ash can irritate the respiratory system and eyes, and urged people to seek medical attention if symptoms persist. Monitoring by the national volcanic observatory confirmed low‑intensity activity, but the alert level remains unchanged pending further observations.
