Popocatépetl volcano emits plume and 44 exhalations as alert stays at Yellow Phase 2

The Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico has reduced its overall activity but continues to emit a continuous plume of water vapor, volcanic gases and ash. Monitoring by the State Civil Protection and CENAPRED recorded 44 exhalations over the past 24 hours, with a plume reaching roughly 300 metres and dispersing toward the southwest and west.

The volcanic alert level remains at Yellow Phase 2, indicating the possibility of minor to moderate explosions, ashfall, incandescent fragments within a 12‑kilometre exclusion zone, and potential lahars or pyroclastic flows, especially if heavy rains occur. Authorities advise the public to stay clear of the crater area, respect the exclusion zone, and avoid the base of ravines during strong rain to reduce the risk of mudflows.

CENAPRED and the National Civil Protection Coordination continue daily monitoring and will issue immediate updates if conditions change.
