Popocatépetl volcano maintains Yellow Phase 2 alert level

The Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico is currently maintaining a Yellow Phase 2 alert level. Recent monitoring has detected 12 low-intensity exhalations accompanied by water vapor, volcanic gases, and ash.

Aerial footage captured from a commercial flight shows a massive column of steam and ash rising from the volcano near the Iztaccíhuatl volcano. Due to current hydrometeorological conditions, direct observation of the crater is not possible.

Forecasts indicate that ash dispersion may move toward the north and west, potentially affecting the Valle de Atlixco, Angelópolis, Sierra Norte, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, and Hidalgo. Expected scenarios for the current alert phase include minor to moderate explosions, variable tremor, and light to moderate ashfall in surrounding populations. There is also a risk of lahars due to ash accumulation and expected rainfall.
