Croatia marks feast of Our Lady of the Angels (Porcijunkula) with nationwide celebrations

On 2 August the Catholic feast of Our Lady of the Angels, known as Porcijunkula, was celebrated across Croatia and in parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The holiday commemorates Saint Francis of Assisi’s conversion in the small chapel of Porcijunkula and offers the “full forgiveness” indulgence to the faithful who attend confession, communion and prayer.

Major events included a procession and mass in Imotski, attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, ministers Gordan Grlić Radman and Tonči Glavina, and Bishop Željko Majić, who led the liturgy at the historic Topana fortress. Similar processions and e‑ucharistic celebrations were held in Gradovrh (Bosnia), Čakovec, Osijek (where a newly blessed Italian‑made icon was displayed), Visovac island and other towns, drawing thousands of pilgrims and local officials. The festivities were accompanied by cultural programmes, concerts and traditional folk performances.

Officials also used the occasion to highlight infrastructure projects, such as the planned fast road between Zagvozd and Imotski, stressing the route’s importance for both Croatian residents and visitors from neighboring Bosnia.
