Porsanger researchers aim to restore kelp forests and cod

Researchers at the Institute of Marine Research are working to restore kelp forests and cod populations in Porsanger, Norway. Hans Kristian Strand, based at the Holmefjord field station, noted that fjord and coastal cod populations have reached historic lows.

Restoration efforts include establishing artificial kelp structures to provide shelter for juvenile fish and protecting key areas from commercial fishing during the recovery phase. Previous trials using lime treatment and natural grazing have successfully helped kelp forests return in areas previously depleted by sea urchins. The project aims to bolster local biodiversity, cultural value, and regional food security, with major measures potentially beginning next year.
