Norway marine ecosystem restoration efforts

Overview

Marine restoration efforts in Norway have focused on recovering kelp forests and supporting local biodiversity. A citizen science initiative coordinated by Rissa Citizen Science successfully helped kelp recolonize areas in northern Norway, such as Sørsjetéen, by removing approximately 100,000 sea urchins to prevent “urchin barrens.”

Building on these types of restoration successes, researchers at the Institute of Marine Research are now targeting the recovery of both kelp forests and cod populations in Porsanger. Because fjord and coastal cod populations have reached “historic lows,” scientists are exploring the use of artificial kelp structures to shelter juvenile fish and implementing protections against commercial fishing to bolster regional food security and biodiversity.
