Porsche confirms development of electric 718 sports car models

Porsche has confirmed that development of the electric 718 series, including the Boxster and Cayman models, will proceed. Board Chairman Michael Leiters stated that the project is economically viable and remains a strategic priority for the company, despite previous speculation regarding its potential cancellation.

The transition follows the conclusion of internal combustion engine production for the current 718 generation in October 2025. While specific technical details such as battery capacity, range, and exact pricing have not been released, production is expected to begin in 2027, with a possible unveiling in 2026.

The decision comes amid a shifting strategy for Porsche’s electrification. The company has adjusted its timeline for several electric models due to technical challenges and changing market conditions. Porsche reported a 5% revenue decrease in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, alongside a 16% drop in vehicle deliveries. To address technical hurdles like battery weight, the company is focusing on an 800V electrical architecture to maintain the performance expected of its sports cars.
