Porsche SE pressures Volkswagen to accelerate cost-cutting measures

Porsche SE is intensifying pressure on Volkswagen to implement rapid cost-cutting measures to ensure long-term competitiveness. Hans Dieter Pötsch, Chairman of Porsche SE, described the current situation as a "historical turning point" for the Volkswagen Group.

The proposed austerity measures are significant, with potential consequences including the closure of four plants in Germany and the reduction of up to 50,000 to 100,000 jobs. These plans have already faced resistance from labor representatives and the state of Lower Saxony. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume aims to finalize a new savings package within the year.

The urgency is driven by financial instability within the Porsche SE holding company, which reported a net loss of 2.2 billion euros in the first half of 2026. This loss was largely attributed to a 3 billion euro write-down on its Volkswagen stake. Meanwhile, Volkswagen's own operative margin has decreased to 3.8% amid shifting market conditions and industry transformation.
