Porsche to partner with Xpeng to manage EU emission credits
Porsche is planning a strategic partnership with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng to manage carbon emission compliance in Europe. The move aims to avoid significant fines imposed by European Union regulations.
Under EU rules, manufacturers face a target of 93.6g of CO2 per kilometer. If a manufacturer's fleet average exceeds this, they face fines of 95 euros per gram of CO2 emitted above the limit. While Porsche intended for its electric models, such as the Taycan and Macan EV, to offset its combustion engine vehicles, lower-than-expected sales of these EVs have left the company vulnerable to penalties.
By partnering with Xpeng, which sold 19,000 electric vehicles in Europe last year, Porsche intends to utilize Xpeng’s emission credits to balance its fleet average. This arrangement allows Xpeng to monetize its credits while helping Porsche mitigate the financial impact of potential fines, a situation exacerbated by the Volkswagen Group's overall emissions exceeding limits.
