Port of Algeciras targets efficiency to counter North African competition

The Port of Algeciras is navigating a complex competitive landscape in the Mediterranean. The Spanish Government has noted that new European Union environmental and energy requirements may increase operational costs for EU ports, potentially giving an advantage to North African ports like Tangier Med, which may benefit from lower costs and different regulatory frameworks.

To counter these challenges, Algeciras is focusing on service quality and digital transformation. Through collaboration with Maersk at APM Terminals, the port has significantly reduced container ship waiting times. By August 2025, idle time was reduced to under five minutes in 95% of cases, down from an initial target of 15 minutes. This emphasis on efficiency and digitalization aims to maintain Algeciras's position as a leading logistics hub despite rising regulatory pressures.
