Port of Algeciras innovation and efficiency initiatives

Overview

The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) is implementing strategic measures to enhance innovation and operational efficiency. To manage its Technical Office for the Coordination of Innovation Activities, the APBA awarded a two-year contract to Idom Consulting, Engineering, Architecture, valued at 602,000 euros. This office is tasked with coordinating the ‘Travesía de la Innovación’ program, supporting digital transformation, and fostering collaboration with startups and universities.

These efforts coincide with a competitive landscape where the Spanish government has noted that new European Union environmental and energy requirements may increase costs for EU ports. This regulatory environment could potentially favor North African competitors, such as Tangier Med. In response, Algeciras is prioritizing digitalization and service quality. Through a collaboration with Maersk at APM Terminals, the port has successfully reduced container ship waiting times, achieving idle times of under five minutes in 95% of cases by August 2025.
