Port of Gioia Tauro announces dredging and cold ironing investments
The Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port System Authority has approved two strategic projects for the Port of Gioia Tauro aimed at increasing competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
First, a five-million-euro contract has been awarded to the Spanish company Dravo to complete dredging works in the port channel. This project aims to deepen the seabed along the southern evolution basin and the Eranova quay to depths between 17 and 19 meters. These depths are essential for the safe handling of next-generation container ships, which can exceed 400 meters in length and carry over 24,000 TEU.
Second, the authority has initiated the first phase of a cold ironing system project. This infrastructure is designed to reduce ship emissions by allowing vessels to connect to the electrical grid while docked at the quay.
