Port of Gioia Tauro labor, security, and infrastructure
Overview
The Port of Gioia Tauro continues to undergo simultaneous labor unrest, security reviews, and infrastructure modernization. While workers previously announced strikes to demand recognition of ‘usurante’ (strenuous) work for pension purposes and raised concerns over employment agency usage, the port is also seeing increased institutional oversight.
Emanuele Crescenti, the prosecutor of Palmi, recently led a delegation of magistrates on a visit to review security protocols and inter-institutional cooperation. This visit included discussions with port authorities, the Coast Guard, and the Guardia di Finanza regarding operational activities and the complex control systems required for this strategic Mediterranean hub.
On the infrastructure and sustainability front, the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port System Authority is advancing several strategic projects. A five-million-euro dredging contract was awarded to the Spanish company Dravo to deepen the seabed to 17–19 meters, essential for handling next-generation container ships. To support environmental goals, the authority has initiated a cold ironing project and is accelerating the implementation of Renewable Energy Communities across the port system.
To manage workforce requirements, the Management Committee, led by President Paolo Piacenza, has approved updates to the Ports’ Organic Plan. These measures aim to better align labor needs with shifting traffic volumes to ensure economic sustainability.
