Port of Los Angeles hits record three-month cargo volume

The Port of Los Angeles has set a new three-month volume record, processing 2.9 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) during June, July, and August. This surge surpasses the previous record established during the Covid-19 shipping boom.

Executive director Gene Seroka attributed the record volume to retailers rushing to import goods ahead of new tariffs and rising fuel costs. The influx includes seasonal items such as Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving decor, and holiday gifts. In August alone, the port handled 955,907 TEU, which is 6% higher than the five-year average for that month.

Industry leaders, including Brian Dodge of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, expressed optimism regarding the upcoming holiday shopping season, noting that consumer demand remains resilient despite economic pressures like inflation and tariffs. While some shipments faced delays due to weather in China and rerouting around the Panama Canal, the port remains a critical hub for goods moving into the U.S. rail network.
