Port of Maputo invests $13.2 million in new cranes
The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has commissioned two new Liebherr mobile harbour cranes as part of a $13.2 million investment program. The addition brings the total number of mobile harbour cranes in the MPDC fleet to eight.
According to Neusa Monjane, the company’s commercial and legal director, the new units have a handling capacity of 360 to 400 tonnes per hour. They will initially serve as backup capacity during maintenance or repairs of existing equipment to ensure operational efficiency and predictability. The investment is part of a broader fleet renewal and an effort to prepare for increasing volumes, particularly in bulk mineral handling.
MPDC is also reviewing its operating model to increase berth capacity, with an enhanced model planned for 2027.
