Attica ports see surge in passenger traffic for final August departures

Attica ports are experiencing a significant surge in passenger traffic as the final wave of August travelers depart for the Greek islands. On Saturday, August 22, approximately 27,000 passengers are expected to depart from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio. Piraeus alone accounts for roughly 16,000 of these travelers across 24 scheduled trips.

This high volume of activity is expected to continue through Sunday, August 23, with total departures for the three-day period from Friday to Sunday estimated to exceed 80,000 passengers. The Hellenic Coast Guard has implemented measures to facilitate smooth passenger access and manage the increased movement.

While the peak of the mid-August period has passed, the current trend shows a shift in movement. Earlier in the week, arrivals back to Piraeus significantly outnumbered departures, but the recent wave of departures for late-summer vacations has reversed this balance. Despite high fuel costs, travel demand remains strong as holidaymakers seek final summer getaways.
