Attica ports and roads face surge as holiday returns peak

Overview

As the August holiday period concludes, the Attica region is experiencing significant movement across both maritime and road networks.

Maritime activity at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio saw a notable shift in late August, with arrivals beginning to outnumber departures before a final wave of travelers moved through Piraeus.

Road networks have faced sustained pressure. By early September, heavy traffic congestion returned to the Athens metropolitan area as residents settled back from summer holidays. On September 1, significant delays were reported on Kifissos Avenue, particularly from the Egaleo level to Nea Filadelfia, exacerbated by a three-vehicle accident near Lenorman in the Sepolia area. Other bottlenecks included Kifissias Avenue between Filothei, Chalandri, and Marousi, and delays of 15 to 20 minutes on Attiki Odos toward the airport.

By September 8, congestion intensified across several key arteries. Kifissos Avenue continued to see low vehicle speeds between Egaleo and Nea Filadelfeia, while Athens Avenue experienced heavy traffic from Haidari to Skaramagas. Central Athens saw increased volume on Mesogeion, Alexandras, and Syggrou avenues. On the Attiki Odos motorway, substantial delays were reported in both directions: exceeding 30 minutes toward the airport from Fylis to Kifissias, and between 15 to 20 minutes toward Elefsina from Anthousa to Kifissias.
