Port of Vigo advances electrification of cruise and container terminals
The Port Authority of Vigo has awarded a contract to Ghenova Ingeniería for approximately 222,490 euros to design the electrification project for its cruise and container terminals. This initiative focuses on implementing Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems, which allow vessels to connect to the terrestrial electrical grid while docked.
By using OPS, ships can shut down their auxiliary engines, which are typically used to power lighting, refrigeration, and other services during port stays. This transition is intended to reduce both atmospheric pollution and noise levels, supporting the port’s “blue ports” policy. The project follows a successful implementation at the Bouzas Ro-Ro terminal, where Iberdrola has already developed an energy supply system for vehicle transport vessels.
The contract for the technical study and project drafting is expected to last nine months and is supported by European funding. The modernization aims to maintain the port's competitiveness against rival maritime hubs.
