Port of Vigo reports record August growth and ambitious expansion plans

The Port Authority of Vigo (APV) reported its best August on record, with traffic growing by more than 11.5%. Cargo traffic increased by 13.3%, driven largely by a 15% rise in general merchandise. Specific sectors saw significant growth, including frozen fish (+15%), fruit (+103%), and preserves (+69%). Additionally, vehicle movement at the Bouzas Terminal rose by 11%, and maritime TEUs increased by 4.5%.

Looking toward future expansion, the APV anticipates significant growth in both cargo and passenger numbers. Projections suggest the port could reach 6 million tons of cargo before 2029. In the cruise sector, the authority expects approximately 400,000 passengers by 2027, a substantial increase from current levels. To support this growth, plans include expanding container terminals and investing 16 million euros in a new Border Control Post at Guixar.

Regarding sustainability, the Board of Directors approved a concession for Iberdrola to install ten electric vehicle charging points within the port area, including six locations at Bouzas, to support the transition toward a ‘Green Port’.
