Port of Vigo sees August recovery amid provincial export declines
The Port of Vigo reported a recovery in August, marking its best month of the year with growth in container traffic, fishing, and cruise ships. Total traffic reached 3.5 million tons, with general merchandise accounting for 3.2 million tons. The O Berbés fishing pier maintained its position as Spain’s leading fishing port, with Vigo recording 18,674 tons so far in 2026, a 6% increase.
Container traffic at the Guixar terminal rose by 8% in August, bringing the year-to-date total to 210,630 units. However, the terminal is currently operating above saturation levels due to limited space. Vehicle traffic at Bouzas saw a 20% increase in August compared to the previous year, though the annual cumulative figure remains down by 2% due to international sector challenges.
Despite the monthly recovery at the port, overall exports from the province of Pontevedra have faced difficulties. From January to July, exports reached 9,071 million euros, a 4.4% decrease compared to the same period last year. This decline is attributed to weakness in traditional European markets and a significant drop in the automotive sector, which saw a 11.3% reduction in exports.
