Porto Alegre Defense Civil expands staff with 50 temporary agents

The municipal Defense Civil of Porto Alegre has hired 50 temporary technical‑operational agents. Their contracts began on Monday (27) and they joined the on‑call roster the following day, raising the total workforce to 72 agents, including permanent staff.

The recruitment is part of a broader effort to boost the agency’s capacity for prevention, monitoring, emergency response and public assistance after a series of extreme weather events. City mayor Sebastião Melo said the reinforcement “represents an important step in adapting the city to the new climate reality, strengthening prevention and emergency response for Porto‑alegrinos.” Secretary‑executive Colonel Evaldo Rodrigues de Oliveira Júnior added that the new agents “expand our operational capacity and strengthen Defense Civil actions on all fronts, from monitoring to incident response.”

The agents will undergo integration training and be assigned across the Risk and Disaster Management coordination, the Monitoring and Alert Center (Cemadec), Administrative and Project units, and Institutional and Community Relations, enhancing both operational and preventive work during the current heavy‑rain alert.
