Porto Alegre residents protest for women's police station after fatal feminicide

Approximately 62,000 people gathered in the Restinga neighborhood of Porto Alegre to protest for better protection for women following a fatal feminicide. The demonstration was prompted by the death of 24-year-old Thamires de Araújo Rodrigues, who was stabbed to death earlier this month.

Thamires' mother, Thaís de Araújo, reported that the suspect, Douglas Vinicius dos Santos Bernardo, confessed to the killing upon being confronted. The suspect, who was the victim's partner, remains in custody as the Civil Police investigate the case.

Protesters are demanding the establishment of a Specialized Police Station for Women's Services (Deam) in the Restinga region, noting that the nearest facility is currently 17 kilometers away. The Civil Police stated that installing a local station is a priority, but cited a lack of personnel for the current structure, with expectations to provide the service next year.
