Porto Alegre women's safety and police protection protests

Overview

Following the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Thamires de Araújo Rodrigues, approximately 62,000 people gathered in the Restinga neighborhood of Porto Alegre to protest for improved protections for women. Demonstrators are demanding the establishment of a Specialized Police Station for Women's Services (Deam) in the Restinga region, as the nearest facility is currently 17 kilometers away. While the Civil Police have stated that a local station is a priority, they cited personnel shortages as a barrier to immediate implementation.

In a separate incident in the Porto Alegre Historic Center, a reserve military officer allegedly threatened two women with a firearm after forcibly removing a Workers' Party (PT) flag from their building. Witnesses reported the man drew and cocked a handgun, causing the women to flee. Although the Military Brigade attended the scene, they did not take the suspect into custody because he was not caught in the act. The Civil Police have confirmed the incident is under investigation by the Porto Alegre Women's Police Station.
