Porto Alegre unions and municipal water authority plan climate resilience measures

The Federation of Public Service Employees (FNU) took part in a three‑day seminar in Porto Alegre from July 15‑17, organized by ISP Brazil, to discuss how climate change—particularly the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul in 2024—affects workers and public services. Union president Pedro Damásio and secretary‑general Iara Nascimento emphasized the need for strong public services, protected frontline workers and collective bargaining mechanisms to prepare for emergencies, reconstruction and climate‑related risks.

On July 23, the Hospitality and Food Service Union (SINDHA) hosted a free lecture for local hotel and restaurant owners featuring Vicente Perrone, director‑president of the Municipal Water and Sewage Department (DMAE). Perrone presented the city’s infrastructure investments, drainage and water‑supply strategies, and actions aimed at increasing Porto Alegre’s resilience to climate impacts, highlighting their relevance for the hospitality sector’s operations and planning.
