Caretta caretta nests reported along Italy's Mediterranean coast

Volunteers and marine authorities have documented several new nesting sites of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) along Italy's coastline in July 2026. In Porto Cesareo, a nest was located between Torre Chianca and Torre Lapillo and secured with fencing, signage and temperature monitoring equipment. Officials emphasized the area's ecological value and urged public cooperation.

A first nest this season was also found on the beach of Vietri sul Mare, where experts relocated the eggs to a less frequented zone and installed protective barriers. Similar nesting attempts were reported at San Lorenzo al Mare in Liguria, where a volunteer alerted coastal guard and marine turtle groups, prompting guidance on non‑disturbance procedures. In Muravera, a beachgoer reported a nest that was promptly protected by the Capo Carbonara marine protected area staff and local forest and environmental services. The coordinated actions across regions highlight ongoing conservation efforts for the endangered species.

These sightings serve as indicators of good water quality and reinforce the importance of monitoring and protecting marine turtle habitats along Italy's shores.
