Rio de Janeiro samba schools begin 2027 Carnival song selections

The Rio de Janeiro Special Group samba schools have begun the selection process for their official theme songs (sambas-enredo) for the 2027 Carnival. The competition schedule features several major institutions and themes.

Portela kicks off the cycle with a tribute to legendary composer Monarco under the theme ‘Ao Mestre, com Carinho’. Other major schools participating in the early stages include Mangueira, which will present ‘Oyá por Nós’ focusing on Afro-Brazilian culture and the deity Oyá, and Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, which will present a political and cultural manifesto titled ‘Latinamente Independente’.

Other notable upcoming competitions include Unidos de Vila Isabel, inspired by the book ‘Torto Arado’, and Porto da Pedra, which is working on the ‘Porto Kalunga’ theme. The selection process is being broadcast via Rio Carnaval TV on YouTube, an initiative by Liesa to allow global audiences to follow the preparations.

In addition to the Rio competitions, other schools are incorporating diverse cultural themes, such as Unidos do Jacarezinho’s focus on the ‘Festa de Oxumarê’ from Bahia, and Paraíso do Tuiuti’s tribute to Tia Ciata.
