Porto Germeño animal rescue efforts after devastating wildfire

A massive wildfire swept through Porto Germeño in western Attica, turning the sky red with smoke and forcing residents to flee as flames encircled the settlement. Volunteer groups, including Stray Pulse and the Volunteer Action of Veterinarians of Greece (ΕΔΚΕ), mobilised boats, fire‑fighting vessels and private craft to reach trapped people and animals.

The volunteers cut chains, opened doors and rescued dozens of pets and stray animals from burning yards and balconies. Many animals received first‑aid from veterinary teams before being transferred to clinics. One dog, severely burned on its paws, managed to return on its own to the home where it had been cared for a week after the fire. The animal is now in intensive veterinary care and will be moved to a clinic for further treatment.
