Porto Germeño wildfire aftermath response

Overview

In early August 2026 the General Directorate for Disaster Impact Restoration completed a region‑wide assessment of the Western Attica wildfires. Inspectors examined 325 buildings, classifying 88 as safe, 119 as needing repairs and 118 as unsafe or uninhabitable. The hardest‑hit Porto Germeño zone saw 82 properties surveyed: 40 slated for demolition, 37 marked red (unsafe) and 29 yellow (repair‑needed). Inspection teams grew from seven to eleven to record damage and trigger compensation procedures. Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas visited, reaffirmed rapid aid, and the municipality issued forms for emergency assistance, temporary housing and reconstruction grants. Damage files are now being collected for state‑funded compensation.

Parallel to the building surveys, volunteer groups mobilised on 6 August to rescue animals trapped by the flames. Stray Pulse, the Volunteer Action of Veterinarians of Greece and other volunteers used boats and fire‑fighting vessels to free dozens of pets and stray animals, providing first‑aid before transferring them to clinics. A severely burned dog received intensive veterinary care and will be moved to a specialized clinic. These animal‑rescue actions build on earlier evacuations and the temporary shelter set up at Vilia stadium, extending the overall recovery effort in Porto Germeño.
