Porto Velho to host National SUS Force base in November 2026

The Brazilian Federal Government has announced the establishment of a permanent regional base for the National SUS Force (FORSUS) in Porto Velho, Rondônia, scheduled to begin in November 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen emergency responses to climate-driven disasters in the North Region, specifically addressing the anticipated effects of El Niño during the 2026-2027 season.

The Porto Velho base will be the third in a series of regional units, following installations in Belém in September 2026 and Manaus in October 2026. These bases aim to provide faster, localized assistance to vulnerable populations facing extreme weather, such as prolonged droughts, heatwaves, and river flooding.

Rondônia is set to receive R$ 61 million from a total regional allocation of R$ 582 million, funded through the Novo PAC and the Amazon Fund. These resources are earmarked for water security, including rural water supply, sanitary systems, and water distribution for indigenous territories. Additionally, Health and Climate Information Centers (CISC) have been activated to monitor the public health impacts of rising temperatures and drought.
