Brazil National SUS Force regional expansion

Overview

The Brazilian government is expanding the National SUS Force (FORSUS/FN-SUS) to enhance emergency responses to climate-driven disasters and public health crises.

In late August 2026, authorities announced the establishment of a permanent regional base in Porto Velho, Rondônia, scheduled for November 2026. This initiative targets the North Region to mitigate the effects of El Niño, such as droughts and heatwaves. The project includes R$ 61 million for Rondônia to support water security and sanitary systems, alongside the activation of Health and Climate Information Centers (CISC) to monitor rising temperatures.

By September 2026, the government inaugurated a new regional base in Rio de Janeiro to manage emergencies in the Southeast. Health Minister Alexandre Padilha noted that this decentralization aims to increase rapid response capacity by up to 20 times, with the goal of reaching any location in the Southeast within 12 hours. This facility is equipped with drones, satellite communication, and specialized vehicles. The government intends to establish six additional bases by the end of the year to ensure nationwide coverage.
