Porto Velho University Hospital to begin SUS services

The University Hospital (HU) in Porto Velho is scheduled to begin providing services through the Unified Health System (SUS) on September 28. This initial phase, established through a cooperation agreement between the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR), the Porto Velho Municipal Health Secretariat (Semusa), and the Brazilian Agency for Support to SUS Management (AgSUS), will utilize the ground floor of the three-story building.

Initial services will include ophthalmology, cardiology, and orthopedics consultations, as well as diagnostic imaging and low-complexity elective surgeries. Patients cannot seek care directly at the hospital; they must first be referred through a Municipal Basic Health Unit (UBS) via the Semusa regulation system. To support this, temporary professionals will be hired under the federal “Agora tem Especialistas” program.

Separately, Semusa has issued a clarification regarding the issuance of medical certificates. Health officials emphasized that certificates are not automatic and depend strictly on professional technical evaluation and clinical necessity. The municipal health secretariat noted that seeking medical attention solely to obtain a certificate places unnecessary strain on emergency services and that patients may only request a declaration of attendance, which confirms presence but does not serve as a medical excuse for absence.
