Portsmouth: Anti-migrant protests clash with police after boat arrival
Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters clashed with police in Portsmouth, England, following the arrival of a small boat carrying approximately 140 migrants. The vessel had traveled a significantly longer distance than usual, crossing the English Channel from Normandy, France, rather than the typical Calais-Dover route.
Demonstrators, some wearing masks and black clothing, blocked roads near the Eastney Marina waterfront and attempted to prevent migrant transport coaches from departing for a processing center in Kent. The unrest resulted in several police officers being treated for injuries, and various police and Border Force vehicles sustained damage. In response to the aggression, officers utilized batons and Pava spray to maintain order and issued a dispersal notice.
The UK government condemned the behavior as “intimidating and thuggish,” while policing ministers noted the organized nature of the demonstrations. Authorities have launched investigations into assaults on officers and criminal damage. The incident follows similar disruptive protests at the Port of Dover earlier in the weekend.
