Anti-migrant protests at UK ports

Overview

In early September 2026, anti-migrant demonstrations caused significant disruption at UK ports. On September 5, masked protesters associated with the Patriot Platform blocked access to the Port of Dover to target small boat crossings in the English Channel, resulting in traffic congestion of up to six kilometers on local roads.

On September 7, hundreds of protesters in black clothing and face masks descended on Portsmouth following the arrival of a small boat carrying approximately 140 migrants. The vessel is believed to have completed one of the longest journeys recorded for such a craft, reportedly departing from Normandy. Demonstrators blocked roads near Eastney Marina and chanted ‘stop the boats’ in an attempt to prevent authorities from transporting the arrivals to a processing centre in Kent.

The unrest led to violent confrontations where police used riot shields, batons, and Pava spray to maintain order. The clashes resulted in the smashing of police vehicle windscreens, damage to Border Force vehicles, and the breaking of a police cordon. Several officers were treated for injuries sustained during the unrest.

Hampshire Police issued a dispersal order, and policing ministers noted the organized nature of the demonstrations. The UK government characterized the actions as “intimidating and thuggish behaviour,” while Prime Minister Andy Burnham warned against the “politics of poison” entering public streets.

In response to the use of anonymity during these incidents, Deputy Chief Constable Andy Mariner stated that police commanders are “absolutely ready” to use legal powers to ban face coverings during protests. This follows warnings from Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood regarding intimidation tactics used by groups such as the Patriot Platform.
