Portugal 10-year Treasury yields reach highest levels since 2017
The yield on 10-year Portuguese Treasury Bonds has reached 3.990%, marking its highest level since March 2017. As the benchmark for Portuguese public debt, this increase implies higher financing costs for both the state and various financial and non-financial companies within the country.
This rise is attributed to a global contagion effect, characterized by increasing yields on sovereign bonds worldwide, including multi-decade highs for U.S. Treasuries. Key drivers behind investor pessimism include rising oil prices and the expectation that major central banks, such as the U.S. Federal Reserve, will implement further interest rate hikes.
Economists note that while the yield is rising, the spread between Portuguese and German debt does not currently indicate an increase in specific risk for Portugal. The movement is largely seen as a reaction to higher inflation driven by energy prices, robust economic growth in the U.S., and deteriorating public accounts in several developed economies.
