Portugal advances green hydrogen and ammonia projects in Sines

Portugal is advancing its renewable energy infrastructure through new hydrogen and ammonia projects in the Sines and Alentejo regions. The CCDR Alentejo has issued installation titles for two major projects in the Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone (ZILS): MadoquaPower2X (MP2X) and MADOQUA NH3.

MP2X, a Project of National Interest (PIN) valued at approximately 2.8 billion euros, aims to establish a 500 MW green hydrogen production unit for industrial and energy use. The MADOQUA NH3 project will produce green ammonia using renewable hydrogen. These developments are intended to consolidate Sines as a strategic European hub for the energy transition and decarbonization.

In a separate initiative, the University of Évora is participating in the H2tALENT project, an international collaboration running until 2030 with a 9 million euro budget. This project focuses on demonstrating practical applications of renewable hydrogen, such as heating buildings in Évora, converting municipal vehicle fleets in Alandroal, and developing renewable energy communities with hydrogen storage in the Algarve.
