Portugal advances six‑month recovery from Storm Kristin
Six months after the Storm Kristin outbreak in late January 2026, Portugal has distributed €3.5 billion of the €5.3 billion damage estimate and paid €83.5 million in state housing assistance covering 35 908 applications across 171 municipalities. Insurance companies have settled 179 046 claims, paying €537.2 million.
Local authorities report that over 200 000 houses were directly damaged. Reconstruction work includes schools, roads, utilities and public facilities. The Jerónimo Martins Foundation has launched a €4 million programme to rebuild more than 100 social‑care homes in Leiria, Marinha Grande and Ourém, aiming to help about 12 000 vulnerable people. The Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian contributed €5 million to 21 community projects, ranging from sports clubs to libraries, in municipalities such as Leiria, Marinha Grande and Alcácer do Sal.
Municipal leaders, including Paulo Fernandes, coordinator of the Central Region reconstruction mission, and mayors Gonçalo Lopes (Leiria) and Tiago Carrão (Tomar), note remaining challenges: unfinished roadwork, unstable forest areas, damaged telecommunications and pending school repairs. Volunteer firefighters in Leiria say they have yet to receive state support despite donations totaling €950 000.
