Portugal advances solar energy projects in Vilar-Tabuaço and Entroncamento
Portugal is advancing several solar energy initiatives despite ongoing licensing challenges. Finerge is seeking environmental approval for the Vilar-Tabuaço hybrid project, a €39 million floating photovoltaic plant in the Vilar reservoir. The project, which features 21 MW of installed capacity across approximately 31,000 bifacial panels, is the latest in a series of floating solar attempts facing regulatory hurdles. Other major developers, including Voltalia and EDP Renewables, have recently faced negative environmental assessments or project withdrawals due to conservation concerns and economic viability doubts.
Separately, the state-owned company Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has announced a €10 million investment to install a 5 MWp solar plant at the Entroncamento Logistics Complex. This facility will include energy storage batteries and is expected to produce 8 GWh annually, covering roughly 30% of the Entroncamento railway substation's consumption. This project marks the start of IP's strategy to reach 50 MWp of installed solar capacity over the next four years, aiming to meet 25% of national railway energy needs and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 16,800 tons per year.
