Solar energy development in Portugal

Overview

Solar energy initiatives in Portugal are progressing through diverse sectors, including large scale utility projects and commercial installations. In the utility sector, Finerge is seeking environmental approval for a €39 million floating photovoltaic plant in the Vilar reservoir, which would provide 21 MW of capacity. This follows a period of regulatory challenges for other developers like Voltalia and EDP Renewables due to conservation and economic concerns. Additionally, the state owned Infraestruturas de Portugal is investing €10 million to install a 5 MWp solar plant at the Entroncamento Logistics Complex to support railway energy needs.

In the commercial sector, Castellana Properties has expanded its renewable footprint by installing photovoltaic plants at the LoureShopping and 8.ª Avenida shopping centers. These facilities, developed via Castellana Green and Sunbird Solar, are expected to produce over 1.7 million kWh of solar energy annually to power common areas and reduce grid dependency. The company has reached a total of 4,000 kWp of installed capacity across its Iberian portfolio.
