Portugal agri-food exports reach 10.6 billion euros amid rising trade deficit

Portugal's agri-food sector reached approximately 10.6 billion euros in exports in 2025, accounting for 13.3% of total goods exports. Key competitive segments driving this performance include wine, olive oil, rice, fruit, vegetables, cork, paper, and cardboard.

Despite strong export performance, the country faces a chronic structural trade deficit in the agri-food sector. In 2025, the deficit increased to 7 billion euros as imports rose to 17.6 billion euros. This deficit is primarily driven by a heavy reliance on imported essential commodities such as cereals, meats, and oilseeds, which leaves the domestic food chain vulnerable to international price and logistics fluctuations.

Portugal exports to 193 markets, with the European Union being the dominant partner. Spain and France are the most significant clients, absorbing 41.3% and 8.8% of exports respectively. Other major markets include Italy and Brazil.
